The Oxford International Brigade Memorial Committee keeps alive the memory and spirit of the men and women from Oxfordshire who volunteered to defend democracy and fight fascism in Spain from 1936 to 1939

Biographies of the Oxfordshire Volunteers

You can read brief biographies of all 33 of the volunteers for freedom who went to Spain between 1936 and 1939 to defend the democratically elected Popular Front government of Spain against the insurgency of the fascist General Franco.  Some went as soldiers and others as humanitarian volunteers.  The full biographies of 31 of them can be found in the book "No Other Way:  Oxfordshire and the Spanish Civil War 1936-39" (copies available through our Merchandise page)
